Down by the Mission San Miguel, there is a
house wherein dwells
Don Carlos and La Doňa Maria Elena Cantrell
I work at the ranch, I saddle her mare,
I ride with a gun behind, as she visits her
friends here and there,
She says “Thank you, Manuel” and “Manuel,
por favor”,
And “Good morning, Manuel”, La Doňa Maria
Elena Cantrell.
I dream of the Mission San Miguel, and it
says to me, the Mission bell,
“She is married, Manuel, the wife of the
rancher, Don Carlos Cantrell.
You work at the ranch, you hold her chair,
You carry her boxes and and trunks and
letters and books everywhere”,
But
I hear with my heart
What she says with her eyes,
She says “Thank you, Manuel”, and “Manuel,
por favor”,
And “Good morning, Manuel”, and “Manuel – close the door”
And
such was the life of a Mexican paisano……

Your writing style varies with the weather, P.S. This is lovely; is it Spanish or Mexican and what's the story behind it? You never cease to amaze!!

I agree with Mark above. You truly have a writing talent! I wonder what inspired this piece of writing. There's probably a very interesting story behind this story, as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Lucana
Mark, thank you. I believe it is from Mexico, but I first heard this some 60 years ago from a friend of my father who was (then) 80+ years of age. He said he had heard the same story from his father and grandfather, so I guess it originates early 1800 - 1850 time. I think it is beautiful and sad.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lucana - I have given the background to Mark, above.
ReplyDeleteSome fine words, P.S. and, again, nothing like anything else I have seen from you. I especially enjoyed the background. Excellent.

James, thank you. It's all about trying out different styles - for the future!
