I am a
passionate believer in small government; I don’t want to be told what’s good or
bad for me – I think I am old enough and wise enough to know my own mind. I
don’t want to be watched wherever I go (it’s happening more and more in England ),
nor do I want to be treated as if I were either a young child or mentally
abnormal. In other words, I want to be left in peace! I guess this is a
situation many of us face – especially if we are “thinking” people (well, if
you’re reading this, you must be!)
So you may
wonder what my photograph of a gull sailing above his reflection has to do with
government. Actually, quite a lot. What you see in the photograph gives no
indication of what’s going on under water – and if the gull (or the government)
wants to get things done, they have to use a huge amount of energy “below the
surface”. Sadly, a huge amount of (governmental) energy is wasted on activities
solely designed to make us ever more “pliable” (more adjustable or less
problematic) to their requirements. And the more this happens, the
bigger and more complex government grows. It’s about time more of us starting
calling for less intrusiveness in our lives, and to be treated as human beings
and not numbers (or even robots)…
Until next time

Excellent, PS - after seeing your great photograph and then reading your thoughts on small v big government, all politicians will appear to me to look like gulls, especially when they open their mouths! Seriously, a fine piece of writing and I agree with your sentiments entirely.
ReplyDeleteJames, Truro
James, thanks for your comment. I think we in the far west of UK are quite lucky, in that the "happenings" in London and the rest of the country have slightly less impact upon us.... thankfully!

ReplyDeleteHere's another seagull that always comes to my mind:
“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.”

Thank you. Lucana
Thank you Lucana. It's a long time since I read those words - I shall have to revisit the book!
