THEY’VE DONE IT!

Earlier in the year, I wrote about one small part of this globe aiming to become fully “green” in terms of electric consumption by the end of this year. I have been keeping an eye on progress and can now say they have done it. The whole island of Tokelau is green which to me is wonderful news – even though it’s a mere atoll, a speck in the Pacific Ocean.

Thus, Tokelau is now the first territory able to meet all its electricity needs with solar power. The three atolls – Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo used to be dependant on diesel to generate their power but New Zealand which administers Tokelau have funded a $7 million solar project covering all three atolls and all are now operational.

So this small atoll plus her two sisters

are now fully powered like this..............

All I can say is...MORE, PLEASE

Until next time (and under the sun),

  1. The overall cost to develop this was high but well worth it in the long term since the ongoing costs of transporting diesel was untenable. I would like to see more Pacific communities (and many others) follow a similar route in the future.

  2. H8i Mark - yes I thought this would interest you and I like the idea of transferring it to other islands initially as well as looking at various other places. Regarding islands, I think here in Europe we could achieve similar -I am thinking mainly of places along the Adriatic coast....so if anyone there has views I would appreciate them.

  3. Wonderful news! This could be achieved also here in Croatia, along the Adriatic coast and I sincerely hope it will be done in the near term!
    Thank you
