CATALYTIC CASH

A team of “enterprising entrepreneurs” have discovered a new way of making money in UK and whilst I am not suggesting that everyone follow their example, it is a most ingenious idea.
Legislation passed some years ago in the UK now make it mandatory for all cars to have fitted special exhaust systems that reduce the level of pollution.
And it has been working very well. Catalytic converters, as they are known, contain a high proportion of valuable metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium, making each unit high profitable when these are separated out - actually several hundred dollars in value.

Enterprising "entrepreneurs” are touring around garages at night and literally cutting out the converters, driving off with them on the back of a lorry and separating out the individual metals, to be sold as scrap. Reports suggest that several hundred cars have been so vandalised.

Is that enterprising or not?

Until next time (and with no car),

  1. Hi, P.S. Good that you have brought attention to this. I have had the same experience. My car was parked in my drive to the house and one night last week these "entrepreneurs" (which is NOT what I call them) took the catalytic converter from my car. I called the police when I discovered it was missing but they couldn't help "we don't have enough men to deal with the problem" was their reply. I am pissed by this - sorry about the language but it is getting worse daily in some areas.

  2. Robert, thank you for your comment. Whilst I have no desire to encourage this behaviour, I felt it right to bring this to the attention of readers, as you say. I admit to being shocked (and disappointed) by your comments on local police - is this a sign of the times?

  3. An interesting blog post, yet a sad and shameful situation and the "entrepreneurs". Still, I do believe the police don't have enough men, as there are so many even more shameful events occurring daily, which is a sign of the times. Where are we going?

  4. Thanks, Lucana. Sad, yes but in a way understandable since when individuals find they cannot live by fair means, they adopt foul ones.
