CATEGORISING

When I meet you, I have a need to put you in a “slot”, a category. And that category needs to be one with which I am familiar as it’s too much trouble to invent another. It’s the same with a company, a product and a website.

This is not just me – it’s everyone of us and we do it so we can survive the daily onslaught of “newness”.

But, as with most things in life you can refuse to be categorised; you can insist that it is unfair for people to judge you, that the categories are too constricting and that you are “unique”. If you go down that route, you will be categorised anyhow! But as you didn’t “participate” you will be placed in the wrong category and that may be far worse than being categorised.

Once again, it’s for you to choose….

What are you? Friend or enemy? Fake or real? Leader or follower? A good deal or a rip-off? Trustworthy or crooked?

By making it easier to be correctly categorised you stand more chance of ending up in the category you are hoping for.

Until next time (and fitting in well),

  1. An interesting view on how we make assumptions about others as well as products. An excellent blog to consider on a wet, miserable day in England. Nice one, P.S.

  2. A very interesting view of human nature in evaluating "things". I would like to use this in school to get the views of my class - I'm sure they will have much to comment upon (as usual)!!

  4. Mark - I think your class will have much to say on this topic. I wonder how they view each other...how they view you (and maybe me!)... their parents and the world around them.... interesting thoughts coming your way.
