BEING “GOOD”

Through millennia of afflictions and disasters often as a result of our collective “code of morality”, many have cried that the “code” has been shattered, that what is distressing us is our punishment for breaking that “code”.

Humankind has been too weak and too selfish; the majority damned their fellow men; they damned “existence”; they damned their own planet – but never dared to question the “code”. The victims of this damnation took the blame – and fought on and were martyred for their struggles whilst the majority went on crying that the “code” was noble but that “human nature” was not good enough to practice it.

Nobody has stood up to ask the question: GOOD – BY WHAT STANDARD? So I will…and more:

What is YOUR code?

What is “being good” to you?

You are privileged to know: have you done your duty?

Until next time (and trying hard),

  1. The concept of "good" changes depending on those who have the power. Sadly, it is mostly used to cause the feelings of guilt, inadequacy etc. amongst the general public to weaken them, so those in power are able to mould them easily. However, there are several personality features or characteristics I'd label as "good" such as selflessness, empathy, respect and dignity to name a few. Nevertheless, speaking in general terms can often lead to misconceptions. Even Breivik believes he was acting for the common good, so to make myself clear, I should now illustrate what I mean with several examples. I cannot do that here (due to lack of space). What each of us can and must do is precisely what you are suggesting: ask ourselves each and every time "What is good?" "Who says so?" and "Why?". Thank you.
