It's nice to be
back and blogging again. In the past few weeks I have had ample opportunity to
consider many things – one of the positive benefits of “enforced idleness”. So
here is a new offering for you…..
In any village, town, metropolis, country or
continent people are stratified according to local custom, status or whatever.
I guess this is just part of being human. At the very top (the 1%ers as I have
heard them called), are the mega-rich who live apart from and have little or
nothing to do with the remaining 99% of us. OK by me, that’s their preferred
outlook on life even though it alienates them from reality. At the very bottom,
there are the mega-poor for whom I feel sorry but (regrettably) cannot do much
to ease their lot in life. It’s the middle that I find interesting and
fascinating and I am proud to regard myself as one of them. These are the
people with whom I have a vast circle of acquaintances and many good friends;
they are the people who are the backbone of their communities, willing to help
within their means. These are the people seldom thought of (deeply) by their
rulers and merely regarded as a means to an end (in other words “squeeze
them”). The small faces as I like to call them will never become “big faces” –
those who seek power, glory, riches or all three.
And this is why
I enjoy their company: they (we) can talk wisely, concisely and without anger
on all topics, who will listen not to the noise or the words but to the
underlying feelings behind the words, who don’t use “spin” to get their point
of view across but speak plainly on the subject.
I often wonder
whether, if any “small face” became a “big face” in any walk of life, they
would grow out of their old skin and become something new in order to fit into
new surroundings. I haven’t met any yet, so perhaps there’s hope.
Meanwhile, I
shall live contentedly in the land of the small faces with the burning ambition
– of remaining exactly how I am!
Until next time
(and content),
