CU È SURDU, ORBU E TACI.......

......campa cent'anni 'mpaci.

With so much negativity going around the world a great speed, one is hard-pressed to avoid it. But it is important to try to avoid excesses – to develop either a thick skin or immunity to some of the more horrendous news. Not easy since today only bad news sells (or so it appears from newspapers and television).

The title of this piece is an old Sicilian proverb, translated as

“he who is deaf, blind and silent,
will live a hundred years in peace”

Personally, I would not wish that on anyone, but the deeper message is that you cannot do much about the wider world as it is outside your orbit to help, so look to your inner circle and help as much as you are able.

Until next time (with most senses working well),

Peripatetic Scribe
* The title also refers to the mafia “code of silence”….

  1. True, P.S.! It is important to remember this, no matter how difficult it appears to be, since it is often not easy to admit: "I can't do anything about it." when we read or hear about wars, famine etc.
On the other hand and sadly, there are many people who find it even too easy to walk away from problems even within their inner circle. But that is the topic for another blog....

  2. Mr. Scribe - I know you do not live in UK but you have a very good idea of what is happening with our media. As you say, only bad news sells and we have too much. A friend in USA tells me some years ago someone started a "good news" paper - it went bankrupt after 3 months as nobody bought the paper as they couldn't believe the "good". You give us a tough ask, but overall I agree with your view. Thanks.

  3. Hi Anonymous in UK. Thanks for your comments. I, too have heard about the "good news" paper in US and it leads me to make the comment: "is the human race becoming ever more cynical"? I believe the answer to be YES!!!

  4. Thanks, Lucana. I agree that there are many cases of intra-family breakdowns which I feel stem from poor communication skills - members do not know how to really talk with each other.....
