THE PEN and THE SWORD

There is a saying in English “the pen is mightier than the sword”.  Maybe; the sword has certainly killed more people than the pen. But this is a double-sided saying; whilst I cannot argue against the sword having killed more than the pen, I do question whether this proverb is correct in its interpretation.

To me the basic question is “what causes mankind to take up his sword in the first place”? We can all think of the numerous reasons for this but consider the driver behind the reason(s). In the final analysis, I would suggest that words are the driver – words of fear, hatred, xenophobia and all the rest.  And that means someone has written such words, which means he/she used a pen (or its equivalent).

Not only does the pen have an even more significant impact than the sword in terms of death and destruction, it is also has the opposite effect; that of bringing to billions of people hope, enlightenment, entertainment, happiness and vitality. Can the sword do this? Only if you’re not on the receiving end!

So, to me, the old adage has validity; the pen is mightier than the sword – the question is how it is used – for destruction or enlightenment?

I am totally against violence of any kind, physically or verbally; I hope I can continue to wield my pen (OK, keyboard) in a relentless pursuit of building positives rather than dive into the depths of hatred and negativity.

Until next time (with an enlightened mind),

  1. Such a change from the last few blogs! The kids have gone crazy over this as it "speaks" their philosophy. One has suggested you are made "Honorary School Philosopher" and it seems to me he (and others) have been inspired. I can only describe the change in them as wonderful! All our thanks!

  2. Anonymous - I thank you for your comment. What is of immense interest to me is that you have young adults willing to think broadly and that is a great asset. These people are our future and all and any help you and your colleagues can give (plus a bit from me now and again) will pay dividends for all. P.S.

"In the beginning was the Word" etc.etc. The pen really is the mightiest of all weapons!
