In an earlier blog (10 February), I wrote about our own personal hidden curriculum vitae; what I said then is still relevant. Only we know all the small details of our life and in my opinion, most of them need to be kept locked away for our own personal consideration.
We have our dreams, hopes and aspirations. One of mine is to see an end to the evils we collectively bring to this splendid planet. It's a dream and I shall never see attained, but I AM trying and, as thinking people, I trust we are all doing the same.
The fact is, that the average man's love of life and liberty is 90% imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great mass of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honour. It takes a special sort of individual to understand and enjoy liberty — and they are usually fugitives in democratic societies. If I am honest with myself I suspect that deep down this is the reason I live as I do. Not so much a fugitive but (to use an American phrase) a bit of an “odd-ball” with minimal reliance on, or interference from, central or any other level of government.
It's not for everyone and each of us should find our particular “brand” of contentment….
What makes you content?

The ideals you mentioned, too, but, since I will probably also not see them attained, I think I have found another path to inner joy: http://gu.com/p/322dc

Another interesting viewpoint. I agree 100% with your underlined words! I think you're living in the wrong place; as I've said before, get you and your boat "down under" and see what living really is all about!!
ReplyDeleteLucana - interesting and it seems to me now that we never find time (deliberately?) for the simpler things in life. The link was extremely interesting to me.P.S.
