I CAN'T

Bombus Pratorum

According to popular 20th century folklore (and proved by science), the little guy above is doing something he should not - flying. But he does it, and extremely well! I guess nobody in the scientific community ever got round to telling him he can’t.

And it’s the same for us; from childhood we are told we cannot do certain things. That’s acceptable as some of the things kids want to do can prove fatal so parental guidance is needed. But as we grow older, this “can’t” attitude becomes deeper and ingrained in us – and what a pity!

Speaking to an individual recently made redundant I asked to see their curriculum vitae as I assumed they were looking for another job. A tatty piece of paper, folded several times, was produced. I was stunned and asked why such a miserable effort.

“Well”, was the reply, “I’ve lost my job, nobody will employ me and I can’t be bothered to create something I know will be a waste of time. What’s the use?” Appalling. If ever there was a case of a self-fulfilling prophecy, this was it!

If we are faced with adversity, surely our “survival instinct” should come to the fore and we should be making every possible effort to ensure, as in the above case, we ARE employed as rapidly as is possible. Accepting the negativity of defeat is lowering our self-worth.

It’s worth remembering the little guy above – he does what he shouldn’t be able to – now, how about YOU?

Until next time (and flying high),

P.S.

  2. Jana - my thanks. Although it seems on the surface that we humans can learn nothing from such a small fellow, I believe that your comment proves we still have an awful lot to learn - from everywhere! P.S.
