For the myriad of American readers, this can be translated as “couch potato” a pseudo-educated sub-class that is growing rapidly in the western “developed” world.
Now, before anyone starts jumping up and down with annoyance, I should explain that I am not against relaxation – the human body and mind need to switch off from the daily toil and find rest and solitude to prepare for the next battle. What I do object to is the 24/7/365 approach to life; those (young and getting younger) individuals who see fulfilment only in doing nothing either physically or mentally. To such people it has become not so much a hobby but an entire way of life – a vegetative process - their sole objective.
What is the point of sitting before that “one-eyed monster” (often known as television) with the remote control in one hand and a beer in the other day after day, brain in neutral? The whole concept is mere chewing gum for the eyes! Do these people have no spirit, no desire to find out what life really is, to stretch themselves either mentally, physically or both? Obesity in young people is a disease almost on a par with cancer and the damage it causes is just as severe. Long-term damage to the brain is even worse – reality ceases to exist!
I am a firm believer in the GOYA principle:
Get Off Your Ass
Until next time (but not on television),
P.S.
Woody Allen spoke about observers and participants in life (Annie Hall), even though I think he was talking about love life. Nevertheless, it could also be implied to attitude to life in general.
ReplyDeleteLucana - you're so right! "Observers" merely exist - "participants" DO. Also comes to mind the saying "a healthy mind in a healthy body". Thanks. P.S.
